Making "Spelunkir," an Elder Scrolls Inspired Blade

This knife was made for a knife exchange that happens every year called Knife in the Hat, or KITH. There is a theme every year, last year's was kitchen knives. This year the them was a blade with a magic theme to it, and my mind went straight to Elder Scrolls games. Friction folders for sale on Etsy: etsy.me/2KxbvOE
Making a Higo No Kami Style Friction Folder

Higo No Kami folders are Japanese in origin, usually with a simple bent handle and riveted pivot. Friction folders themselves have been made even before 43 CE. With only 3 main pieces, not much can go wrong with these.

    Pretty neat. When I use old files to make knives, I make sure to grind off all of the teeth. Failure to do so results in little cold shuts forged into the blade. That what those diagonal lines are, on one side of an otherwise beautiful blade. Those are stress risers which can cause the blade to snap, usually at the worst possible time. I would not carry this knife into any situation where I would have to depend on it for my survival. A beautiful knife, a great sheath. It would make an awesome camp knife.

    I've made many of many of knives on an anvil.. and for me knowing you should be very proud of that design because it's actually not easy to replicate.. and that design usually is an eye catcher. Coming from a Russian woman blacksmith

    Have you told the people why you put the water on the Anvil I'm sure they would like to know.. when you're finishing up your knife blade at the end if you put water on your Anvil it will take all the lights slag off of your knife and make a cleaner product

    I wanted a chef knife that works as a multi-tool in the kitchen because looking after the collection of knives is a difficult task for me. I like that it is very sharp, cuts vegetables, great chopping. and cuts meat with a breeze. Happy to purchase it from Almazan Knives.

    You can buy little tines cheap online but you can’t buy marimbula tines which is their bass equivalent. Those are as scarce as hens teeth; Jamaicans make theirs from old phonograph coils.

    How far above the tuyere do you rest your workpiece before you do the forgeweld? Ive been trying to forgeweld using hardwood charcoal but im either not getting it hot enough or leaving it in the oxidizing part of the flame for too long. Could you do a video about how to forgeweld with charcoal?

    • @RougemontForge
      @RougemontForge 2 года назад

      I have since dismantled this forge. You want the piece 2-3 inches away from the tuyere (above it) and with lots of charcoal piled on top. The oxidizing ambient air is more of a threat to forge welding than the air coming out of the tuyere.
